Masterclass ‘Nerikomi & Agateware’ with Sam Andrew – 5, 6 & 7 juni ’26

450,-

Course Overview
Nerikomi or agateware are coloured clay techniques where the movement of clay is captured within the ceramic body. You can knead, layer, cut and combine pieces to create intricate patterns. In this workshop you’ll learn how to colour clay and prepare blocks and canes to create your pieces from. Then you’ll press-mould your creations into tableware. You’ll come away with the knowledge of how to avoid the common pitfalls that result from the many joins within your work. We’ll also create some pieces using the inlay technique.

About
Sam Andrew is a ceramicist specialising in press-moulding, wheel throwing and coloured clay techniques. Sam meticulously layers clay in contrasting colours. With thousands of lifts and slaps the layers compress. Slices are taken from these layered loaves, of striated slabs, which are then pressed into lined tableware. Sam has developed a process of incorporating his own studio waste: off-cuts, shavings, and failed pieces, into new works, creating highly patterned, visually intricate vessels. His mother was taught by some of the best potters in the UK at the time, including Emmanuel Cooper who founded Ceramic Review and the Ceramics Centre opposite the British Museum in London. Sam was taught by his mother since a young age, he changed career, after training to be a Neuropsychologist, and now runs a pottery studio in Manchester which has been delivering pottery classes and workshops for over 25 years.
